I have had a similar problem intermittently for the past few months with my SB3 (sound drops out or screen goes blank). Tried everything, including Slimserver updates and Squeezebox firmware revisions.
Finally traced the issue to the cable from the Squeezebox power supply picking up noise from adjacent mains power leads. Re-routed the Squeezebox power lead away from the other power leads and problem solved.
