The end of record companies doesn't mean the end of recorded music. 
That guy who makes music in his basement will keep doing it for the
same reason he does it now- he loves to do it.  The difference is that
now there won't be a big record company standing between him and you. 
You won't have Clearchannel deciding which 3 artists you get to hear. 
Sure they control the radio, but who listens to radio any more?

People will still make, record, and distribute music.  It isn't going
to go away.  It will just change.  For a while it will be harder for
some artist and nonartists to earn a living by making music.

Why is everyone so afraid of change?  I think the average music lover
is going to have more music, and more quality music available to them
then ever.  Internet radio isn't yet under anyone's control (though
they are certainly trying).  No one will ever stop file sharing.

No one can say how things will end up, except that it seems likely the
big recording companies will either change their business or
disappear.
