I'd suggest not removing the itunes music directory. But feel free
to remove anything within that folder you no longer want. In fact, I
do this as a regular matter of course. I really wish there was some
option *I could access* that would tell ITunes to leave my files
where they are, and not to move the blasted things to where it wants
them.

That's why generally I now use quick time for playing things. I'll
let ITunes play cds, but everything else I open with quicktime,
because it doesn't do that.
