I just escape back out of it, wait a second or two and a lot of times it will then speak. Mine seems to do that when I have just closed an ap then go to dock. So in those situations I am guessing the ap is still in the closing process, and it ties vo up a little bit.

Will try the VO + w next time it does it though. Fortunately it doesn't happen very often.

Hi John and Jane,

I have an iMac, an eMac and a PowerBook and I have experienced it on all three machines. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's the laptop or the desktop unit, it still occasionally happens. With respect to turning off and on VO, I understand that it would work but I've noticed that in most cases this Quiet Dock sort of thing remedies itself soon after I open an app and get doing things so I'd rather not have to go through turning it off, then on, then going back to the Dock and so on. Just my preference. Thanks for the input though.
