Hi Joe. I take your point, there are bound to be cases where new features are promoted. What irritating me slightly, and I'm not alone, is the fact that when we made our purchases of these old models late last year, Apple made no mention of the pending new ones. To those of us who were entering the Mac scene for the first time, this information would have been highly advantagious I think, given that we would then have had the opportunity to place our purchases on hold, (maybe giving Apple some commitment to buy), and we would then have started out with the new model. Regarding an audio player which is accessible, I'd like one where I( can move easily around playlists, even jumping through nested playlists to locate specific tracks by name. Move backward and forward in a track with audible feedback, pause, play, stop, and also have access to how much time in the track or playlist has elapsed, and how much is remaining. Yeah, I'm probably expecting a little much here ... but that is my definition of accessible. Not simply being able to browse to a playlist and load it. Thanks.

Hi Gordon,

Which Apple branded software is incompatible with PowerPC machines? It's relatively straightforward to build a Universal Binary with Apple's own developer tools. If we're talking about software which is (or needs to be, or benefits by) taking special advantage of features of the Intel processors then perhaps it's reasonable to accept that certain of the software (particularly "professional/ industry" titles) will require an Intel machine.

If you're speaking of Front Row...Front Row (and the Apple Remote) is included on all new Macs and is not available separately (actually, the remote is, in fact, available separately). In the case of Front Row, this seems to have less to do with supporting both chip types and more about adding interesting features so new machines are especially appealing. This is part of the business. This seems reasonable. Finally, it seems Front Row is, in fact, a Universal Binary. I'm not suggesting you act on the following, but here is some relevant information from MacRumors:

Very shortly after Front Row's debut, several websites started speculated over the possibility of running Front Row on other Macs. Hacked versions of Front Row soon appeared on the internet, with instructions on how to install and use on other Mac OS X systems. These are unsupported by Apple but illustrate a potential future for the software once the buzz of the new iMac G5 quietens down.

What features are you looking for in an accessible audio player?

Hi. So it would appear that Apple has already begun producing software which is incompatible with PowerPC machines. I guess I win my bet ... I predicted to a friend earlier this year that this would happen. Like me, he bought a PowerPC Mac Mini only a matter of months ago, believing that Apple would continue to support the platform with reciprical releases. Ah well, such is life. I'm still hunting for an entirely accessible audio player for the Mac. Thought I'd found one in Winamp-For-The-The-Mac yesterday, but it only supports, and in fact relies on OS9 being installed. Then I tried Audion 3.02, and was again disappointed. Anybody got any ideas as to where to look next? If so I'd be grateful.
