sharing files between Macs

Folks,

I want to share files between the Macs on my network. I assumed that  
personal file sharing would be sufficient if I'm using the connect to  
server (command + k) from finder. I can't seem to get the connection  
it failes stating that the user name or password are incorrect, or  
login disabled. It sees the machine on the network, but will not  
connect. I have successfully done this in the past, but can't for the  
life of me recall what I've changed if anything that isnt' allowing  
it to work. I'm sure its something really simple, but any suggestions  
appreciated.
