I can understand NFB asking Microsoft not to include a screen reader as
it means there is competition. There are 2/3 main screen reader vendors
on Windows, and they would probably (have to) give up if Microsoft made
an built-in one.
But no-one made a screen reader for OSX until Apple did (on version 3 of
OSX?), so you can't really blame Apple for taking that on.
Unfortunately it's application support that will prevent many people
from having a choice to move from Windows, you simply couldn't work in
many offices without good outlook access.
NB: That JAWs works with so many applications isn't really thanks to
Microsoft, the screen readers have custom scripts to work with pretty
much any program.
