The key here as has been pointed out is that you need to actively use your Mac. Trust me I first was confounded a bit by VO and navigating about on the Mac, but I did a little rtfm and dove in head first. It is also true that you can not compare windows-based screen readers to VoiceOver, they are very different in their approach, but there are some similarities. Amazingly one complaint I've heard is having to hold down the control and option keys, well you know not only can you lock those, I rearly do, it becomes second nature and very comfortable to just hold then down and do my thing. Matter of fact one thing I learned was that you don't need to do this in many cases. I never read my mail by holding down those keys and using the arrow keys, I just use the arrow keys to read the message, navigate finder, and so forth. Like I said, Safari was a little tricky at first to get used to, but this was partly learning to navigate with VO and once I understood the great flexibility and the fact we're not dealing with MSAA, it got much easier. Yes, true some sites don't play as nicely with Safari as it might with IE, but I've also found that in more cases than not its the way the site was put together.
So, jump in, the water is warm, we're waiting for you.
