Richie, there has to be a GSM carrier in your area, no?  It may not be
Cingular, but an alternate carrier should allow you to utilize the phone.

My issue here is that companies such as Singular and Verizon don't want 
to go through the red tape to set up stores and frequency carriers with 
the FCC and SEC with regard to Alaska and Hawaii because regulations 
for commerce in Alaska and Hawaii are different from other states.  
These companies provide services where it is most economical for them, 
as well as their customer base.  Subsequently, products enjoyed by 
people in the Lower 48/Mainland don't get to Alaska or Hawaii until a 
year or two after the products are already marketed.  Richie
