It is possible that copy will fail, one instance I know of is if you are trying to copy something with restricted permissions or if you are trying to copy to a folder with restricted permissions but there is a dialog that warns you of this. In tiger, when this fails, press vo-f2 twice quickly and see if there is a dialog. Some times, all vo says and it gets stuck on it is "dialog for" and in that case, you have to turn of vo and turn it back on.

The other problem with copying is that you need to make sure you are doing it correctly. There are two ways to past assuredly into the correct folder and all things being equal, they will work. 1) make sure you are inside the folder you want to paste into and press command-1 and then commmand-v 2) if you are viewing in column mode, just go to the folder and not inside it and press command-v to paste.

thanks to all of you for your invaluable input I now feel that after a week of owning a Mac that I am becoming a bit more confident.

I suppose after 2 weeks I might start getting something done.
