No, I suspect what your encountering is that you probably are highlighting a folder already so one of two things can happen. If you move into a directory and are on a file, you can paste over it, you need to press VO-keys+command+f4 or simply move up one level in the directory tree and then past it the file. This will put the file in the directory you currently have highlighted or your cursor is on. If you move into a folder and lets call that the top of that folder's tree, then you have folders within that folder, and you attempt to paste a file while your cursor is already on a folder, your file will end up in that folder. Hope that makes sense.

thanks to all of you for your invaluable input I now feel that after a week of owning a Mac that I am becoming a bit more confident.

I suppose after 2 weeks I might start getting something done.
