irssix is a frontend to irssi with irssi coming with it, it doesn't actually install the command-line traditional version of irssi on the machine. As for lists of channels, you can type /list, but depending on the server, config and network status, you may or may not see it. There might also be the chance you do a /list on a huge network like efnet or something. My favorite is to look for these channels online, either on searchirc.com or http://irc.netsplit.de.
