The problem is that while iChat is fantastic for individual chats, it's not
too great for multi-person conference chats like IRC.  This is the same idea
with having IRC support in multi-protocol chat apps like Adium, Trillian and
others - the interface is just so geared towards individual chats that group
chats are awkwardly implemented.  Best bet is to try to use an accessible
client, which you might not be able to find on a mac.  I've mucked around
with Colloquy's source to see if I could do anything with it, but it's
honestly easier said than done, sigh.
That being said, I played around with irssi - NOT irssix - a bit in
terminal, and it's a lot more doable than some of the clients I played with
for a couple minutes.  ymmv.
