Hi Keith,

Yes, it's possible to make shortcuts, but you'll find that you don't really 
have to do very much of this.
For example, many people put their most frequently used applications in the 
Dock,
and navigate to those apps with VO-keys+D to get to the Dock, then use VO-keys 
and the 
right/left arrow keys to find the applications they want, and open with 
VO-space.  I also put a frequently
used folder in the Dock, but that functionality seems limited in Leopard 
because of the new
Spaces feature.  Also, there are the very useful shortcuts (from Finder) of 
Shift-Command-A
to go to your Applications Folder and Shift-Command-U to go the Utilities 
Folder. Once in that
directory you need only start typing the first letters of the app name to find 
it, and you can use
Command-O to open it.  You could add a frequently used folder to the Finder 
sidebar by selecting
if and typing Command-T.

I'll let someone who is running an up-to-date Leopard release give you more 
relevant information
for your system.
