In additon, you should get some sighted assistance and run the following command in single user mode. To get to single user mode, start your Mac with command-s held down until your sighted friend sees a bunch of text start flowing on the screen. We'll never have access to this, as this is actually stopping the boot script that loads everything. Type:

fsck -yf /

Read the above line character by character. The "fsck" is file system check. The "f" is force, the "y" answers yes to any questions. The forward slash is where you want to scan. As no other disks have been recognized at this point, that's where you want to specify. This will run just like the verification in Disk Utility. Disk Utility is actually a wrapper for this tool. Now, if the message is "The volume "blah blah blah" appears to be OK" appears, you're in great shape. If something like "*** File system modified ***" appears, run the same command again. run it until you either get a message specifying true failure, or the OK message. These are the only two outcomes, either it will fix the disk or it will fail.

Now, if it isn't a directory damage situation, you may want to ask a friend to help you make a temporary admin user. They will go to System Preferences and click Accounts. There, they will add a new account and grant admin access. The plus sign at the bottom of the user table is the button to click to add a new user. If you have automatic login turned on, you will be offered to turn it off. I suggest that. Then, log out. when at the Login Window, sign in as the new user. If you turn on Voiceover and still experience issues, you need to contact AppleCare or bring your Mac over to the nearest Apple Store and meet with a Genius.

By the way, pulling your battery out of your computer in any situation is really bad for the hardware. I honestly think the best thing to do is hold down the power button until your Mac turns off. It may take more than 10 seconds. Also, you have to be applying constant pressure. If the button doesn't contact for even a fraction of a second while waiting for it to turn off, the clock starts over. This is usually why the Mac doesn't die after 10 seconds. Also, the same reason a reset on an iPod doesn't go as planned for many people. Even I have trouble, and I reset many iPods over the course of a work day.

Good luck,

Hi,

• Have you tried restarting again?

• If that doesn't work, maybe you could try resetting the PRAM. Do this by restarting your Mac, and when the startup chime is chiming, press cmd-option-r-p. These keys must be pressed simultaneously as the chime is chiming. It will make another chime noise if you did it correctly. continue holding these keys down until you hear three startup chimes not counting the original one. You may wish to practice getting your fingers wrapped around the key combination. I use my thumb on the cmd-option and my left index finger on the r and right pinky on the p to perform this operation.

HTH.

Please help me. I don't know what to do and am freaking out. I was
listening to some stuff with VLC Media Player. Everything was working
fine and then, I got the System UI Server message telling me to plug
in my computer. I was in the car so couldn't do so, but I thought I
hit ok on that. Anyway, VLC wouldn't close. I tried everything. I
even tried holding the power button to force the computer to shut down
but nothing. So I removed the battery and put it back in. VLC
stopped and the Mac restarted but now I can't use the vo keys. It's
like they don't exist. I was able to get to GMail but I couldn't
click on the link to read my email. Then, when I went in Finder and
tried to hit s for Safari again, it did nothing. I thought it was
cause I accidentally switched my keyboard to Greek but it's et to
English. The only things I can do are change things like the rate,
volume and pitch etc using command option and crtl and the arrows. I
can't open things or even get to my home folder. Can someone please
tell me how to fix this?

Thanks,
