I cannot find the airport admin utility. I am not certain I follow: "For computers that have a non-Apple wireless card, you may have to ask the administrator or do some simple trial and error to tell if WEP or WPA is being used. You can assume the network is using WEP if a password does not seem to work when typed as it was given to you."
I have no problems configuring my Mac for instance to work with my non apple router without the $ sign. In any event, I've tried wep 64-bit with and without the $ and 0x and neither work. I have also reset the AE several times and have used both automatic and manual settings in the airport utility. I will read the reset doc but the instructions I have say to simply push the reset button to reset and to restart, unplug and re-plug the power. I came across the hex escape key ($ sign) prefix when I experimented with reconfiguring the AirPort Express to add wireless access for a Windows laptop. Initially, we could only figure out how to set that machine up with WEP encryption, and the the first time I tried to change the security to WEP, I didn't realize I'd have to add the $ sign to the beginning of the hex password, but everything worked when I did. That was a few years ago, but when I read your post I searched for a recent Apple Document about password entry. The old version of the document that updated (04/28) Apple article was modified from can be read from here: http://web.archive.org/web/20060430222949/http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106424 AirPort: Joining an encrypted wireless network It actually said: <begin excerpt> For computers that have a non-Apple wireless card, you may have to ask the administrator or do some simple trial and error to tell if WEP or WPA is being used. You can assume the network is using WEP if a password does not seem to work when typed as it was given to you. <end excerpt> You can also try performing a hard reset of your AirPort Express. Below the plug for the audio port where you plugged in your headphones you can feel a small indentation. If you hold your AE so the ethernet port is at the top, you'll have (from top to bottom): ethernet port, USB port, audio port, small hole for reset. Unlike the other ports, the hole for reset is not on the centerline, but is offset slightly to the left. It is just large enough to fit the end of a straightened paperclip. If you do try this you'll need to reconfigure your AE (again!) with a wired ethernet connection and using the AirPort Admin Utility. <excerpt from the MacFixIt tutorial on Fixing Wireless Connectivity> Performing a hard reset of your router (including AirPort Base Stations) [Useful for: repeated dropouts, no Internet access] This is an easy workaround, an is effective in a surprisingly high number of problematic cases where AirPort Base Stations will not appear in the AirPort Admin utility or refuses to allow Internet access. Instructions for performing a hard reset involves first unplugging your Base Station from power and the active network connection, then following the instructions in the following Knowledge Base documents: Extreme Base Station Express Base Station Graphite Base Station Snow (Dual Ethernet) Base Station Note that after performing a hard reset you will need to connect your Mac to the Base Station via a wired (Ethernet) connection in order to re-configure it and apply the proper networking configuration via AirPort Admin Utility. If your third-party router has a reset button, try using it for a similar effect. <end excerpt> The link to the Knowledge Base document for the Express Base Station is: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044 HTH.
