Ahh, I thought it might be something added on. I tend to keep this
particular mac clean so when I test it's more like the 'out of box'
experience most users will encounter.

Hi Chris and others,
I don't usually follow up with extraneous comments after I've answered
on a topic, but "additemtodock" is something you have to download from
Lucid Information Systems at:
http://lucidsystems.org/luciddocktools.html
but it's included in the Automator workflow at Tim Kilburn's VoiceOver
downloads page that I pointed people to:
http://homepage.mac.com/kilburns/voiceover/downloads.html
along with full instructions. The Automator workflow is easier for
people to use, because it's just as though an extra menu option were
added to the normal Finder options. The workflow also provides
another feature that additemtodock does not do: in Tiger, it allows
me put folders from my iTunes Library into the dock, navigate quickly
through the hierarchical menu structure, and start the music playing
in iTunes that way. If I put the podcasts folder into the dock with
the Automator action, I can also access (and play) any podcasts --
including those added after I put the folder in the dock -- from these
menus. This is NOT the same as navigating through Finder's folder
structure. The hierarchical menu structure of folders placed in the
dock (under Tiger) is much faster and you when you select a file in
the menu structure you don't open it and add to iTunes the way you
would from Finder -- it just plays. It is also totally accessible.
When Leopard implemented Stacks, the built-in support for
hierarchical menus in the dock went away. There are some software
solutions to regain this functionality, but they require using drag
and drop. There are more details about all this in the list archives.
Most people won't care about the other functionality of hierarchical
menus (in Tiger) -- they'll just find the complete installation
information and directions at Tim's site, and the Automator plug-in
implementation simpler and easier to use. It works on applications,
as well as files and folders.
Cheers,
Esther

Really? I just tried
man additemtodoc
and got no entry. I tried a man -k additem but also found nothing.
Are you sure you don't have to install this from somewhere?

There is a shell command additemtodoc. Do a man additemtodoc command
from terminal to find out more.
Also I think some one wrote a auto-mater command that would add a
item to the dock.

Hello everybody,
I want to add a directory to the dock like downloads o documents.
I can read in leopard manual that I have to drag and drop the
directory from
finder to dock.
How can I do this with voice over?
Thanks and regards
