That possibility has always been there and also is in 1.1.2:

In the File - Open... dialog
- select the file you want to open, then
- select the file type to open as

For the second step, you need to scroll down in the file type list to see all the individual formats. You should do the steps in this order, as the file type selection also adds a filter to the file list to show only files with the registered extensions for this file type. Otherwise, to choose an arbitrarily named file after selecting a file type you need to type the name yourself.

If you chose a filter that can't open the selected file (e.g. text for a binary file), it will revert to the automatic detection.
