Laurence (and others in the process of learning Flex 3/Actionscript 3),
I understand that you're still learning Flex and trying to get a handle
on the nuance of MXML and actionscript 3. In order to help in that
endeavor I'd like to show you some good tools and tutorials to go
through and hopefully it'll help further your understanding quicker than
this mailing list may be able to provide.

Lastly:
Google: www.google.com
Nope, not joking. I, and I'm sure many of us in this group, use
google.com on a daily basis to find quick answers, and hopefully good
code examples for things. I have yet to meet a developer in the last
eight or nine years that didn't use google very regularly to help
discover answers to simple and complex questions.
Of course, sometimes tutorials, searching, pulling hair out, etc. simply
doesn't work. That's when networking with AFFUG and others really
shines due to the sheer number of experts within.
I hope I'm coming off as somewhat helpful here and not something
unintended. I could easily tell you the answer to your question, but
I'm hoping you'd find the joy out of discovering/learning that on your
own. If after reading this you'd rather just wait for an answer from
someone, I understand, but I at least wanted you to know of many places
that offer a "your-own-pace" type of learning.
Thanks,
Justin Nichols

How do I pass a parameter into an MXML component? I've been using
"global" variables (this.parentApplication.variableName) to accomplish
this, but that's very sloppy programming.
I'd like to know the proper way to pass parameters into an MXML
component please.
