If you set the source and property to the text input, and set "required" to "false," then the validator will not automatically fire on focusOut. Instead, you create your own focusOut handler, with the necessary conditional logic to validate US/Canadian zip codes when appropriate. The source and property bindings will cause the error message and red line to appear when you call validate().
