One topic that we should address is the usage of the build-in PPTP VPN capabilities. We know it is unsafe to use, and does not fit the SME Server philosophy. I think we should at least offer a save alternative, and leave PPTP in with a warning.

Maybe we can take a closer look at Daniels OpenVPN contrib to see if it can be a core component?

Indeed we have to write and update a 'new roadmap' for the SME Server,
I will try to have a look on this, but even if anything start by an
idea, we need coders or people really involved for doing it. You could
easily understand it is not because you need it for your job, That we
will do it for your beautiful eyes. Please come here and become
volunteers :)
Yes, setting a roadmap would be good, but, with the sparse resources we
currently have, we shouldn't add any ETA ;-)

-Horde

I would see SME Server with your contrib to become a core part of sme.
We started with horde, for what I tested, it is useful, thanks for
your works.
I agree that our current horde is far too old. We should either replace
it with a more current one, or drop it completely from the core. I
personnaly am more in favor of moving it out of the core (but keep it as
a maintained contribs), but, this is just my personal POV (and because I
use SOGo anyway)

-Samba4

For the next release we will have to use it. It is really not my
circle of competencies, other may answer better than me, mainly if we
want to have an Active directory compatibility. I have the feeling
that it is wanted, asked, but no works really started. Please go If
you want this.
I frankly don't see what samba4 would buy us. It seems a huge job for
very small advantages

Plus side:
- - workstation auth a bit more secure as we'd switch to a kerb based stuff
- - MS tools to manage workstation (not even sure this is a plus ;-))

Cons:
- - huge integration job
- - we must ditch all our currently working stuff and replace them with
the one supported by samba (mainly DNS and LDAP)
- - all our currently working apps using LDAP would break, as switching
to samba 4 will force the AD style LDAP scheme

Maybe I'm misinformed on this topic, so please, correct me if I'm wrong,
but I personally don't think it worth it

-Centos7/SME10

I'm not kidding, huge challenge, at minimum all services must be
rewritten for using systemd.
Starting to work on C7 would be a far better investment IMHO. it'll be
hard, probably a lot more work than the C5 -> C6 switch (as Stephane
noted, a big part of the job will be because of the switch to systemd,
but there's also tons of advantages. I especially can't wait to have
every service logged through Journald)

Modernizing the server-manager should also be high priority, and this
will need a lot of work. First, we'd need web designers to create a more
attractive look'n'feel, and perl coders to rewrite all the panels with a
more modern framework (probably Mojolicious, as proposed by Charlie, and
I agree it's an excellent framework)

Cheers
