I agree that when done from the distribution itself it needs to be done correctly. But having said that, then we should also not have paranoia - if the distribution gathers version and install date, I cannot find any reasons for objection. If we go beyond that (which I think we should), then it should be with consent. But also here I would suggest an opt-out rather than opt-in strategy.
