I should have a definite answer in a few days.

I'd built dkim-milter on a 32-bit centos 4.4 machine, and ldd tells me
it picked up a dependency on libcrypto.so.4, aka openssl 0.9.7. The
mail servers where the crashing occurred were 32-bit centos 5 (which
seems to have openssl 0.9.8 as a default). All of the crashes
occurred at exactly the same place in the openssl (0.9.7) libraries;
in my mind, that makes the older openssl libraries suspect.

Now that I've comandeered a 32-bit centos 5 machine for building, I
hoping to get a new version out early next week.
