By golly, you're right. I'd forgotten that group syntax isn't allowed in the From: line. That's a bug in the spec, I've talked to Pete Resnick about it and we have to fix it for EAI message downgrading. In practice, we've never found an MUA that treats group syntax on the From: line differently than it does on other lines, so we can get away with it.
