No, it presumes that side conversations are the exception, and that
list conversations *generally* take place on the list.


It used to be the opposite…reply to the poster used to be the
default, rather than reply to the list… People changed the settings
on many lists once they could.


Some.  Maybe many.  Far from all.

A simple 'reply' still usually goes to the author and not the list.

Overloading Reply-to, to force 'reply' to go to the entire list was the additional use I referenced. It has an obvious utility but it, too, has a serious downside: sending a note to the entire list when you thought you were sending it only to the author.

And, of course, it makes sending a note to the author extremely inconvenient. Like it used to be 40+ years ago.
