GTk is part of the Redhat/FreeDesktop.Org/Systemd constellation, and from what I hear is being welded tighter and tighter to Gnome every day. It's all part of the same syndrome: Unpaid Shadetree Programmers and DIY experts need not apply. Fortunately, there are alternatives.
