Nicole, I'd say that what you have there is going to last you several
years
with good maintenance. One of the guys on another car list I frequent has
240,000 miles on his 3.5L Eagle Vision, which is essentially the same car
you have. Being in Colorado, you don't have the rust issues we do up here
in Michigan, so it's just a matter of maintaining mechanical stuff. You
might start budgeting for transmission repair. What you have right now
could last a long time, being that it's a 97, they made a lot of
improvements to the trans between 1993 and then. But if you can see your
way clear to socking away an extra $1500 over the next year, and in the
meantime CHANGE THE FLUID, you'll be ready if it does let go.

Well, Sorry to butt in here, BUTT!
If the fluid has not been changed as a habit, I would not start now! Too
many times a transmission fluid change starts more problems than it
fixes! I am all for maintenence, but start with getting the car back on
the road. Look for ways to better your miliage, and safety. $1500 may be
better spent on your next car, because if you did spend $1500 on your
Intrepid, it would not make the car worth $1500 more. It still would only
be transportation. IF You were involved in another T-bone accident,
the insurance company will only pay book value, based on miliage and
condition. A new transmission is considered maintenence, and doesn't
increase the value. My wife totaled our Concorde, and the other guy's
insurance paid as little as possible! Stuff happens, and you still get
screwed! Tom
