I would start out by checking for burnt out fuses. I wouldn't think the speed sensor has anything to do with it. If you find a burnt fuse, you can be assured there is an electrical short somewhere that is responsible -- just replacing the fuse is unlikely to solve the problem for long, if at all. It could be that a wire got pinched when they reassembled the steering column while changing the multifunction switch.
If you can't afford to take it in, you'll have to do the electrical detective work yourself. If you just don't have the skills, I recommend taking it someplace other than a dealership. Usually the dealer is the most expensive place to have repair work done. (Not always, but usually.)
