I am about 95% positive the mechanic is correct with the problem being
the ignition switch. But it would also help to know what year the car
  is.

This problem has probably gone away by now, and will randomly occur
again later on. I find that it happens most frequently when I have too
many keys on my key ring, and the weight of all of them tugs away at
the ignition switch. The solution was fewer keys, and if that still
happened, just slight jiggle of the key would make everything start
  working again.

  All repairs are expensive regardless.
