IMO the steering is the Achille's heel of both the 1st and 2nd generation
models.  I had problems with both of mine needing a rack and pinion.  I
traded the '96 rather than put the $1200 into it; the '98 got a new rack but
then the transmission got flakey.  These are not trouble-free cars by any
means, but they are fairly well built and on par in terms of quality with
any other domestic make.
