As I understand it, most of the problems with the racks is a result of their
center take-off design. For reasons I don't completely understand, the
location of the attachment to the tie rods compromises the strength of the
unit overall. At least, that's what I recall reading quite some time ago.
The design is flawed, not the execution of it, and so the racks will fail
earlier than they should.

The point I was trying to make is that the quality of rebuilds has gotten so
poor, and the replacement of a rack and pinion unit in these cars is so
labor intensive that it really only makes sense to buy the best parts
available. To the best of my knowledge, the best available are the new
units available at the dealership. The design is still compromised, but at
least it's assembled correctly and should last far longer than a rebuilt
unit.

The rebuilt Cardone rack I had put onto my 1998 was garbage. It worked, but
it was noisy and didn't feel right, and wasn't going to last a long time.
The same was true for the three Cardone power steering pumps I put on before
finally giving in and getting a new Mopar unit. Yes, the new unit was three
times the price of the rebuilt. The three rebuilts all failed within a mile
or two. Absolute garbage. By the way, these were all purchased from a NAPA
store, which in my opinion is a chain that is quickly losing its reputation
for quality parts in their quest to be price competitive with Autozone and
Checker/Schucks/Kragen/Murrays.

Unfortunately, that's the situation Ma Mopar left us in. There isn't a lot
we can do about it (except sell the car!)
