I have never heard of a Mag failure in a motor glider in OZ but I may be wrong.
However I follow the GFA rule of not flying over anything I can't land on or
glide past so I don't see any risk personally, but not all pilots follow that
motto.

2 years is a bit much for sure - friend of mine was chief engineer with a
fleet of twins but he has never had a serious Magneto problem in the 6 years
and tens of thousands of hours. He had log books with each magneto and only
once did he have a problem while on line - the passengers sat in terminal
building while they changed over magnetos!!!! It turned out that another
aircraft came on line so passengers went in that and this twin did a freight
run a little later.
It would be interesting to ask "has anybody had any issues when a Slick went
in for service". Might ask Peter Leese tomorrow who does all the magneto
service at Lismore as he would have done hundreds of Slick. He always says to
me "I will be using new points" and always gives me a report on condition.
Germany say your Altimeter must go in for service each 3 years but we do not
bother with that rule. Also I have been at Streifenders in Germany and they
seem to weigh a motorglider every second year!!
Personally I would consider dirty or below spec car fuel to be a far greater
risk in motorgliders than a slick failure.
