Yes, 11.04 was first release.  Though possibly not fit for release based
on all the criticism at the time.  Gnome Shell didn't make 11.04 so
perhaps they wanted Unity in there to grab a headstart.  11.10's version
was meant to be more polished.  There's a saying about some things you
just can't polish.  :-)

More recently Shuttleworth has admitted that Unity was all along aimed
at being a common interface on TV, tablets, phones, and, oh yes, laptops
and desktops.

Criticism of Unity is sometimes answered by saying it's easy to install
another desktop but it's the primary one that gets all the love and
attention.  KDE's decline on the sidelines of Ubuntu shows that.

Linux Mint seems to be picking up Ubuntu users.  It has an edition based
on Ubuntu and another on Debian.  http://www.linuxmint.com/  That's not
a recommendation;  I haven't tried it.  Ubuntu 10.10 here still.  :-)
