Yes, 11.04 was first release. Though possibly not fit for release based
on all the criticism at the time. Gnome Shell didn't make 11.04 so
perhaps they wanted Unity in there to grab a headstart. 11.10's version
was meant to be more polished. There's a saying about some things you
just can't polish. :-)
Best version of Unity was by Larry Young :)
I'd assumed Gnome Shell was a ...shell. But I gather it's another giant
icon UI.
