Tim et al, "I think asking how long a piece of string is would of been easier."
I think I expected an answer like that, I understand your point completely! "As a new user to Linux I would of installed xubuntu simply as it give you a graphical interface rather than the command line that the server gives you (xubuntu is a light weight GUI compared to ubuntu)" The reason for installing Ubuntu Server was that a work colleague is an avid Linux user - he suggested it, and I specifically want to learn without the GUI. I'll persist with it at the moment, but bear in mind your advice. "A useful program I install on my linux box is mc (midnight commander), this is a very simple text based user interface (sort of early gui). I find editing files a lot easier than trying to remember key combination for test editor like vi" Obviously being new, the above doesn't mean too much to me at present, but I've noted the program name and will come back to it once I've got the basics covered. "If you are going to be playing with web servers then you will need to install LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP)" I saw this as an option on the install but didn't add it. I assumed I could add it later, once I know how! "I hope you find some of this useful" Yes all useful thanks. Just to give you a bit more information, I do work in an IT environment installing windows servers and networks for the traffic industry, so I'm not completely new to it all, just the command structure of Linux - That's the reason for wanting to use command line and not the GUI Thanks, Tony. -- Next meeting: Bournemouth, Tuesday, 2013-04-02 20:00 Meets, Mailing list, IRC, LinkedIn, ... http://dorset.lug.org.uk/ New thread on mailing list: mailto:[email protected] How to Report Bugs Effectively: http://goo.gl/4Xue
