It's worth bearing in mind too that, just because you have a GUI
installed, it doesn't mean that you are obliged to use it.
The command line sits beneath it and is always available, regardless of
what is running on top.
However, good luck with your endeavours! I recommend O'Reilly's Linux In
A Nutshell and Linux Pocket Guide if you are determined to go the CLI
route; the former is very rich in content while the latter has some nice
little bite-sized chunks of information that will quickly get you where
you want to go.
