oh boy oh boy oh boy! I couldn't find that html file. I did a search of my whole C drive! HOWEVER.... your sugestion worked! I backed up my localprefs, changed the launch mode in prefs, reloaded the deskbar, and it works! THANK YOU! Turns out that I was being dumb after all. I'm embarrassed to say that there were TWO entries for launchmode in my localprefs. I kept changing the first one, but the second one still had launch mode as 0. D'OH! Never would have seen that if you hadn't told me the problem might be with localprefs. Again, THANK YOU.
