Hi Doug

These things are very different.

If you want to enhance CW performance of the R-4C, you need the Sherwood 600
Hz roofing filter. with switching kit. With that you can switch between
regular Drake roofing filter, which is fine for SSB and the Sherwood 600Hz
CW roofing filter, which is superb for CW. If you're thinking about also
adding SSB roofing filters, you might want to use the Sherwood custom front
panel switch but if you just want the CF/600 then you can use a spare
contact pair on the R-4C mode switch. If you'd like further details, just
ask.

Forget the GUF-1 filter. Waste of time. I have one and it isn't worth the
time to put it in place.

Subject: [drakelist] Roofing filter for CW contesting?

> I've been reading the material available on various web sites and thinking
about adding a first IF, "roofing", filter to my R-4C. I use the rig for
rag chewing on CW (and occasionally SSB) and also for CW contests. The new
filter would only be to enhance CW ops during contests. But, normal SSB
operation must be retained.

I'm reading the Sherwood Engineering web site correctly but it *appears*
that one would need the filter, the filter switch kit and the custom front
panel switch. That option totals $300.

> There is also the GUF-1 from International Radio. It's 8 KHz so not quite
the same thing but no doubt a huge improvement. That option is $120.
