Jim,
I think Evan hit the nail on the head in a previous post. Why Drake did
what they did with the MS7 and MS8, I don't know. I too have some hearing
difficulties, and wear hearing aids. I will tell you that the MS 4, being
bigger and in a bigger box, does sound way better than either of the
aforementioned speakers. Another thing I have experienced is with the RV4C
speaker. Not sure why, but it sounds excellent. I use it exclusively with
my TR4C. I've not researched it, but there must be something about the
speaker manufacture that tells the story. All I can say, is...my TR4C is
only hooked up to the RV4C speaker, and the TR7A is hooked up to a MS4.
Both sound great, with or without hearing aids inserted ! Maybe some
experimentation with replacement speakers as Evan suggested, as well as some
foam, or even enclosing the back would improve things, so for completeness,
if you want an MS8, find one at a good price and do some tinkering. That's
what us hams do you know !!
Good luck,
David

David,

Thank you very much for the comments about the MS-8. May I ask you this
question please. In your opinion why would the MS-8 be an inferior sounding
speaker ? Would it be because of the case it is in ? The area that the sound
is being squeezed down into. I think the MS-4 has a 4" speaker but a larger
cabinet and maybe that is why it sounds better. Also the R8 is fairly scarce
and I think the MS-8 would look great setting next to my R8. I have four
Drake rigs, the R-4A, T-4X.....R-4C, T-4XC, and two TR-4C's and all the rigs
have their own speakers, also the MN-2000 and a MN-4. I thought I would be
really complete if I had the MS-8. I will take your advice and use both if I
am ever able to get a MS-8.

Thank You,

Jim/NW5F

Jim,
The MS8 is out there, but got a bad rap from the git-go as to sound quality.

I, myself purchased a brand new R8 when they came out and then, contrary to
opinion,... and because I'm a bit hardheaded, ..ordered the MS8. Well the
opinions were right,...and it was not a very good speaker. I sent it back
to Universal Radio for credit. An MS4 sounds much better and thats what I
used for the time I owned mine. Even better for broadcast listening is a
powered computer speaker. In addition, the internal speaker sounds pretty
darn good. OK, having said all that, it would be nice, from a collector
point of view, to have the infamous MS8 sitting next to the world beater R8
or its able successors the R8A and R8B. Hope you find one!! But if you do,

use both the MS8 and the internal speaker together for best results. David
