Ken, the TR4 has an 0A2 regulator, it’s a gas filled tube
used to regulate the 150VDC voltage line. Its normal for
the tube to glow and the glow varies with the amount of
regulation needed.

2nd question, by all means turn off the radio when not in
use, what is the point in leaving it run for long periods of
time when not being used. The radio was designed to be
shut off, thus the off-on power switch. Tubes have a
definite life cycle and are rated to function for a certain
number of hours before failing, usually thousands of hours.
But like a light bulb, they will eventually fail due to use.
The excessive heat alone could due more damage than the
stress of turning the radio on and off. There is a
certain amount of circuit and tube stress when turning on
and off the radio, but if that were to occur, it’s a safe
bet the failure was ready to happen anyway.

Boy I'm having fun with my new Drake! I worked 2 stations in
Serbia on 20m SSB (one was mobile), busting right through a
pileup on sunday afternoon. Love it!

Anyways, I noticed that V20 had a neon blue arc at the top
for 5-8 seconds when I first turned on the rig this morning.
Looking at the schematic V20 appears to be a voltage
regulator.

I've got 2 questions:

1) Where can I get a replacement?
2) Should I leave my TR4 on from now on?
