Assuming you've followed the (again, recommended - see subversion book) 'vendor 
drop' strategy, it adds no more than about 30mins to the merging process. It's 
probably going to be minor compared to merging actual source changes, and it's 
not likely that you would be doing it that often.

Maybe you could even reduce this by simply accepting the version number changes 
from the incoming update, and then do something like a release:prepare to 
update the version numbers?

I'm not adverse to using ${project.version}, but it doesn't seem like a big 
advantage, and we need to check that it doesn't interfere with our normal 
release procedures, or the possibility of using the toolset for people to make 
their local changes.
