Whenever this is brought up, I worry that DSpace will go the way of SAS and wind up duplicating most of the operating system. With my sysadmin. hat on, I dislike seeing periodic processing fragment, so that I have to look here *and* here *and* there...to know when the system will be busy and should not be scheduled down. What about providing a wrapper around the OS' scheduling facilities? On Windows it interfaces with Task Scheduler; on Unix it rewrites a crontab fragment. (This would be useful far beyond just DSpace.)

DSpace requires certain tasks to be run periodically. Currently, this is left up to the system administrator outside DSpace to run them via cron or Scheduled Tasks. Since these commands are just launchers for Java classes, there is no reason why we couldn't move this functionality into DSpace and manage the tasks and how often they should run via the admi...
