DSpace requires certain tasks to be run periodically. Currently, this is left up to the system administrator outside DSpace to run them via cron or Scheduled Tasks. Since these commands are just launchers for Java classes, there is no reason why we couldn't move this functionality into DSpace and manage the tasks and how often they should run via the admin UI. One of the components that would enable us to schedule tasks is Quartz: http://www.quartz-scheduler.org/ Feel free to post other suggestions.
