I don't think that it is a good idea to give the tomcat write access to any files that gets parsed by cron. I'm afraid that our admins wouldn't be glad for security reasons. But we could write a cronjob, that checks the database for queued jobs. Every administrator could decide how often this job should get started, which would determine the minimal period of time between two runs of a job scheduled by DSpace. The disadvantage of this idea is that we would have to create a database table that stores information as when or how often a job should be run and when it run last time, which would duplicate functionality of cron.

DSpace requires certain tasks to be run periodically. Currently, this is left up to the system administrator outside DSpace to run them via cron or Scheduled Tasks.
