I have seen on my own setup, that you can successful authenticate as 
u...@domain.tld (upper case) and u...@domain.tld (lower case), yet only 
the lower case version will actually retrieve stats.  I initially found 
this as a user was logging in as n...@domain.tld rather than 
n...@domain.tld and opened a support case that they could not see stats.

I'm not sure if this is 100% relevant to your case, but worth bearing 
in mind.
