It's a Compaq Presario 1685. I used the upgrade version of Windows ME. I
wasn't trying to set up any sort of a dual boot or anything, just attempt a
normal update of the OS with the upgrade installer.
As far as the machine prior to the attempted install, it was up to date with
all the appropriate Compaq softpaqs installed, as well as modern drivers
sought out and installed.
Sounds like this is one laptop that ME might be incompatible with. Oh well.
One good thing came out of all this, I suggest he replace his laptop with an
iBook, which he's going to do next week.
