Brandy -

thanks for the info. you really know your stuff. but Windows sucks.
i just had to say it. too bad it's so affordable. petulant
corporate virus that has united the world in dependency on a highly
unstable system. course, job security comes out of it, too.

seems like i could say the same about Apple. tell me i'm wrong.

Question being when you performed the upgrade did you keep a copy of your
old system? If you did that means you can restore your old system and you
can use you computer the way it was. Since your computer is a couple of
years old it was designed for Windows 98 and will not go up to Windows 2000,
although it may, (I mean just maybe do Windows ME since after talking to a
friend at Microsoft, Windows ME is based on the Windows 95 kernel) only the
new systems put out by Compaq support Windows ME older computers do not
support it in most cases. You need to contact tech support at Compaq and
see what drivers etc... you need to upgrade and or have ready BEFORE you
attempt to upgrade to Windows ME. Your main concerns are the hardware
support for Windows ME meaning processor, DVD-Rom if it's a US model and
CD-Rom for Canada, ESS sounds system, Modem updates. The really shitty part
about Compaq, IBM and Worst of all HP is that the systems are designed to be
a certain way and fight you every step of the way doing an up grade, you
loose function of the sound system very fast and in most cases the only way
to restore something it to use the recovery disk which formats the drive and
you loose everything. In most cases the Windows 98 drive system will not
function with Windows ME for a system specific profile like your computer
has.
Get the upgrades then give it another shot! By the way JUST FYI Windows ME
in the end of the Line for the Windows OS based on the Windows 95 kernel,
all OS systems from microsoft in will now be based on the Windows NT/Windows
2000 system. (Make damn sure this is a retail version and not a Beta 2 or 3
they all expired Aug 15, 2000 and requires a drive format.)
