Thanks for all the good information.  I'd downloaded all the updated Windows
98 drivers prior to the attempted installation, I don't know that trying to
get anything for Windows ME would help as the machine won't boot after
installing ME to the point that I could even update anything.  Anything
previous, I'd assume, would be overwritten.  The version is a retail-upgrade
version of Windows ME.

I guess that it's just one of those things.  Not to worry though, we'll just
use the Compaq restore CD and put it to like-new state for sale, and he can
look forward to his new 466mhz Graphite iBook.  Now that, I know I won't
have any problems with. :)
