Don't know what area you are in but if you can obtain a can of cold, that is a chill
fluid or even the dust blower that office supply stores carry (In the real old days
we used freon). Then spray down the power supply first, then the motherboard. If you
have an intermittent connection the cooling will contract the pc board first and allow
a hairline crack/bad connection to make contact. Be sure that the moisture that forms
has dried before turning anything on. Should take about 10 sec. That usually checks
for intermittent and bad connections. The fact that you heard a pop though indicates
that a chip possibly gave up the ghost.
Now it gets dicey. If you got guts open the power supply and first look for pregnant
resisters. Resistors are little tubular devices with color bands around it and a wire
at each end (yes, I know about surface mount resistors, but those usually don't go
pop). A resistor that goes pop is usually a higher current one, watt and up. All
resistors should have a parallel look to the sides. If one has a bulge, that one is
one of your culprits. If that is the casewell best bet would be replacement of the
PS. I don't think this is the place for board repair 101. Sorry for the length, I get
carried away, been there, done that.
the guy up north with too many computers.
