You do need Speed Doubler 8 (updated to 8.1.2) for compatibility with
OS 8 or higher. I'm surprised you were able to get v2 to run at all
under 8.1 - probably an older, not updated version that doesn't check
the system version.

I find the Faster Emulation portion of Speed Doubler makes an immense
difference on any older 603-based Powermac, including the 2300, 2400,
and right up to the 6400/6500. Without it I find my 2400 sluggish;
with it, it's snappy. There's a lot of 68k code being run from ROM in
these machines, and Speed Doubler helps with that a lot (at the
expense of some RAM for the code cache). The Speed Copy feature and
other fluff is a matter of taste (I always kept it all turned off).

I haven't noted any instability or incompatibility from Speed Doubler
in a long, long time - not since old versions of Netscape 2 and SD2.
In fact, I use SD8 with OS 9.0.4 on my 2400, even though it's not
supported by the company, having patched the extension to remove the
bits I don't want (everything but the replacement 68k emulator) and
update the system version gestalt check to anything below 10. I've
been running it this way since August without any trouble at all, and
it's generally faster and more stable than 8.6 was. It does use a
sizable chunk of memory for the OS, however. It should be noted that
I've only tested it without VM or RAM doubler, since I don't like
using either of them on the Mac OS and I can manage with 80MB.
